Thursday was a free day, so we decided to have some fun on our own. The weather was beautiful for the first time since we arrived in Seoul [Image 30, Image 31], so we walked to the subway station, hopped aboard, and headed downtown. Seoul is a huge city and has one of the world's greatest subway systems. The subway is clean, extensive [LINK], and cheap, and it made our public transportation experience there a great pleasure (especially since we're from Detroit, where public transportation consists of a few dirty buses and a mile-long monorail). Downtown we walked around for hours, visited Myong-dong Cathedral [Image 33, Image 34], the central Catholic church in Seoul and site of the famous 1987 pro-democracy sit-in, and explored the narrow streets of the shopping district [Image 35]. Carla and Joe weren't as fond of Korean food as Deborah and Tom were, so they were a bit hungry for something western. Donuts and Coca-Cola filled the bill [Image 36]!
Later we stopped at one of the many shopping malls downtown and Tom and Deborah had a surpisingly good (and inexpensive) Korean lunch at the mall's food court [Image 38, Image 39], while Carla and Joe nursed their jet lag [Image 37]. When we were through eating and relaxing, we made our way to the subway station [Image 40] and headed off for our next adventure [Image 41]!
