Monday morning, we flew to Chicago via Delta Airlines. Carla, Tom, and Joe were too jazzed up on the first leg to sleep, but Deborah was able to get a little shut-eye [Image 3]. Joe let off some steam in the play area at O'Hare [Image 4] during our layover, and that helped him to get some Zs on the long flight to Seoul [Image 5] on Korean Airlines. One of the great things about flying Korean Airlines is that we got our first taste of Korean cuisine during the mid-flight meal [Image 6], which consisted of a remarkably good bibimbap, gochujang sauce, steamed rice, hot seaweed soup, sweet pickled radish, and tea. Overall, travel from home in Detroit to our hotel room in Seoul took about 22 hours, crossing 13 time zones and the International Dateline, which means that we didn't arrive in Seoul until late Tuesday afternoon local time. Joe handled the extraordinarily long trip amazingly well. His parents, not so much. The fact that we were up all night before we left, packing and trying to find a hotel with a vacancy, didn't help. By the time we got settled into our room, Carla was immobilized with fatigue and quickly fell asleep at about 7:00 PM. Tom, Joe, and Deborah were hungry enough to overcome their exhaustion and venture out into the city. We found a McDonald's not too far from our hotel and stopped to get Joe some familiar chicken nuggets and orange juice [Image 7, Image 8]. We then passed a local kimbap shop and decided to get a few carry-out rolls for Deborah and Tom to take back to the hotel [Image 9]. The kimbap was very cheap and very delicious...yum!
